CompTIA Trifecta: How to Earn A+, Network+, and Security+ in One Year

Introduction: The Most Powerful Foundation in IT

Ask any experienced IT professional what certifications they’d recommend to someone starting from scratch, and there’s a high probability they’ll mention A+, Network+, and Security+. These three CompTIA certifications — sometimes called the CompTIA Trifecta — form the most comprehensive foundational qualification available in IT.

Together, they cover hardware and operating systems, networking principles and infrastructure, and cybersecurity fundamentals. Earning all three in a single year is ambitious but genuinely achievable with the right plan. Here’s exactly how to do it.

Why the Trifecta Makes Strategic Sense

Each certification in the trifecta builds meaningfully on the previous one. A+ establishes hardware, OS, and troubleshooting foundations that Network+ builds on with networking infrastructure knowledge. Network+ establishes the networking foundation that Security+ builds on with security concepts and threat mitigation strategies.

Studying them in sequence is therefore more efficient than studying them independently — each certification reinforces and extends the knowledge of the one before it, reducing the total study time required compared to approaching them as three separate, unrelated credentials.

The Year-Long Plan

Months 1–4: CompTIA A+

A+ consists of two separate exams. Core 1 (220-1101) covers mobile devices, networking basics, hardware, virtualization, and cloud computing. Core 2 (220-1102) covers operating systems, security fundamentals, software troubleshooting, and operational procedures.

Month 1: Core 1 Foundations

Study hardware components — CPU, RAM, storage devices, motherboard components — and mobile device management. Use Professor Messer’s free A+ video course or Mike Meyers’ Udemy course as your primary resource. Get hands-on with actual hardware if possible — disassemble and reassemble a laptop or desktop.

Month 2: Core 1 Completion and Practice Testing

Complete Core 1 content covering networking basics, virtualization, and cloud concepts. Begin Core 1 practice testing. Aim for 80%+ on practice exams before scheduling.

For Core 1 preparation, CompTIA A+ practice questions on CertEmpire provide realistic question sets across all Core 1 objectives with detailed explanations — essential for identifying gaps before exam day.

Month 3: Core 2 Content

Sit Core 1 exam, then immediately begin Core 2 content — operating systems, security procedures, malware removal, and troubleshooting methodology.

Month 4: Core 2 Completion and Exam

Complete Core 2 content and practice testing. Sit Core 2 exam. Take one week off before beginning Network+.

Months 5–8: CompTIA Network+

Month 5: Networking Fundamentals

Study OSI model, TCP/IP model, subnetting, and common protocols. Subnetting is the topic that trips up most Network+ candidates — spend as much time as it takes to truly understand it, not just pass questions about it.

Month 6: Network Infrastructure

Study switches, routers, wireless standards, VLANs, spanning tree protocol, and routing protocols. Start building network topologies in Cisco Packet Tracer — it’s free and invaluable for visualizing concepts.

Month 7: Network Security and Cloud Networking

Study network security, WAN technologies, cloud networking, and network virtualization. These topics have significant overlap with what you’ll study in Security+ — you’re building a foundation you’ll extend in the next phase.

Month 8: Practice Testing and Exam

Take multiple full practice exams. Target 78%+ consistently. Sit Network+ exam. Take a few days off before beginning Security+.

Months 9–12: CompTIA Security+

Month 9: Threats, Attacks, and Vulnerabilities

Study malware types, social engineering, application vulnerabilities, and threat intelligence. Your networking knowledge from Network+ makes the network attack content significantly more intuitive.

Month 10: Architecture, Design, and Implementation

Study security frameworks, cloud security, Zero Trust concepts, cryptography, PKI, wireless security, and endpoint protection.

Month 11: Operations, Incident Response, and Governance

CompTIA has increased the scenario-based question weight on recent Security+ exams significantly. Practice applying concepts to realistic scenarios, not just recalling definitions.

Month 12: Full Practice Exams and Exam Day

Target 80%+ consistently on practice exams. Sit Security+ exam.

Tips for Staying Motivated Over 12 Months

Celebrate Every Milestone

Each passed exam is a genuine achievement. Give yourself a real reward — a night off studying, a nice meal, something meaningful. This makes the marathon sustainable.

Study With a Partner

If you know anyone else pursuing IT certifications, study together even if asynchronously. Sharing progress, discussing concepts, and accountability makes the solo grind significantly more manageable.

Track Progress Visually

A simple calendar where you mark off each study day creates a streak effect that’s surprisingly motivating. Missing a day breaks the chain — which motivates you not to miss days.

What the Trifecta Unlocks

Holding A+, Network+, and Security+ qualifies you for roles including IT support technician, help desk analyst, junior network administrator, junior security analyst, and systems administrator. Salary ranges fall between $55,000 and $85,000 depending on location and specific role — a solid foundation for a career that can reach $150,000+ with continued experience and certification development.

For extra practice materials to support your preparation across all three certifications, CertMage offers study resources that work well alongside your primary study plan at each stage of the trifecta journey.
